Can you swim in Key West?

Key West beach

The Florida Keys are one of the closest U.S. destinations to a tropical paradise, but sandy beaches are few and far between in this archipelago. Key West is no exception.

The island sits on coral rock, so natural sand is limited, and some of the beaches have been replenished with imported sand over the years. The water, though, is warm, clear and perfect for taking a dip. Here’s what you need to know about swimming in Key West.

Where to swim

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park

Fort Zachary is one of Key West’s best swimming beaches. It sits at the southwest end of the island, and the water here is some of the clearest in Key West. This is a coral beach, so water shoes are recommended. Fish hang around the rocks close to shore, which means you can snorkel straight from the beach without booking a boat.

Smathers Beach

Smathers is the largest public beach in Key West, running about a half mile along the Atlantic side. Palm trees line the sand, lending a tropical feel. As one of only four public beaches within the city, Smathers draws around 150,000 visitors every year, so be prepared for crowds.

Higgs Beach

Higgs is a good pick for a relaxing swim. It has a wide, sandy beach and calm, shallow waters. The newly renovated pier is a great place to watch the sunset.

Hotel beaches

Some of Key West’s best beaches for swimming are for hotel guests only.

Casa Marina has one of the biggest manmade private beaches on the island, and if you want even more swimming opportunities, there are two oceanfront pools on property. The Reach, right next door, boasts Key West’s only private natural sand beach.

Closer to downtown, Southernmost Beach Resort has two beaches and three heated pools for swimming on chillier days. Pier House Resort & Spa has a private white sand beach near Mallory Square.

Where not to swim

The water may look enticing, but you can’t dive in just anywhere. Key West Harbor, Mallory Square and the marinas are busy with ferries, charter boats and other traffic all day. Skip swimming there, and don’t jump off piers or docks, especially where people are fishing.
