This pristine Florida beach is the perfect day trip from Orlando

Beach at Canaveral National Seashore

I’ve spent 28 years in Central Florida chasing skip-the-line ride passes at theme parks and hard-to-get dinner reservations, but one of my favorite places in the area requires neither: Canaveral National Seashore. One of Florida’s longest stretches of undeveloped beach (24 miles) on the Atlantic coast, this peaceful spot is about an hour east of Orlando.

I bring my National Park Pass (officially the America the Beautiful Pass, which covers the park’s entrance fee for a year or a lifetime) and pick a beach that suits my mood. Apollo Beach has lifeguards and basic restrooms for an easy family day, while Playalinda, further south, trades amenities for solitude (and, at its far north end, a clothing-optional stretch that typically catches newcomers off guard). If you go, pack everything: water, food, sunscreen and shade. Unlike the theme parks, there’s no gift shop bailout if you forget something — the Apollo Beach store sells books and souvenirs, not supplies.

Time it right and you’ll catch a rocket launch overhead, nesting sea turtles between April and October or migratory birds in winter. No lines, no apps — just the sound of the waves and a horizon that makes everyday life feel very far away.
