This Florida state park has a historic fort you can explore by candlelight and gorgeous ocean views

Amelia Island Fort Clinch

Located on Amelia Island, Fort Clinch State Park is the home of one of the best-preserved 19th-century fortifications in the United States. The construction of Fort Clinch as it’s known today began in 1847, and in 1935, the site became one of Florida’s first state parks.

I had no idea how impressive Fort Clinch was until my first visit after moving to the island. Once inside, we were greeted by guides in period uniforms. The fort held more history than we ever knew existed on Amelia Island — there were bastions, a prison and furnished barracks. Plus panoramic views of the coastal landscape from atop the fort walls. Fort Clinch was never fully completed and was never used in direct combat, although it served as a military post during the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and World War II.

Perfect for a day trip when visiting Amelia Island, you’ll find living history exhibits and war reenactments at the fort, in addition to hiking, biking and other activities in the 1,400 acre park. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia River and St. Mary’s River you can also fish for flounder, hunt for shells and sharks’ teeth and might even spot sea turtles nesting. Throughout the year, Fort Clinch hosts other special events, including candlelight tours, Union Garrisons and larger-scale reenactments.
