If you’re aching for great North Carolina seafood, a restaurant in Wilmington has the cure. At Rx Chicken & Oysters, owners chef James Doss and his wife Sarah create delicious remedies direct from the sea to your table.
The Dosses aren’t just a culinary power-couple, they also grow their own oysters, as well as mussels and two types of clams. “We joke that I love oysters so much, we had to start raising them or go broke,” jokes Sarah. Their Lucy Bea oysters – briny, buttery, perfect – are the talk of Wilmington.
Their dedication to local seafood doesn’t stop at bivalves. They also spearfish grouper, snapper, hogfish and spiny lobster, for true farm- and fin-to-fork dining.
“We wanted to connect Rx and our guests directly to the sea,” says James. “As a chef, I wanted to challenge myself and stay excited about seafood, so we raise oysters and bring in our own fresh catch. With our own oysters and fish, and with other purveyors, we’re able to serve all North Carolina seafood, and we’re proud of that.”
On the menu, you’ll find those Lucy Beas, as well as pickled shrimp, which are also a must-eat. Look for Lionfish, an invasive species that the Dosses hunt and prepare with an expert hand. Not a fan The fried chicken is excellent, too.
